I think that the principal "english lenguaje challenge" in Chile is how the educational programs about this are implemented and most especially in the public sector. is difficult to lear english when your education about it is so mucha poor and inefficient, when in 12 years you repeat the same things about verb tense and irregular verbs, a constant and nonsense repetition that only bores you and doesn't let you learn. if the classes are the same during 12 years, you don't learn so much and if outside the classes you don't have instances to practice, you really can´t learn.
My basic knowledge of english was given by the videogames, i like the rol playing video games genre, and in the 90's the most of these videogames only had the english lenguaje as option.
so, when you entry to the university and take the english course, you only have a poor educational base and in the best of the cases, some self-taught knowledge.
in my case, take the english IV course two time, the first time i can't finish it because the workload of the other courses was to much, and to be honest, the teacher wasn't a "very motivated person". this year in this course i feel so much motivated and i think that my level in english has improved. the workload maybe is the same, but the teacher make it more interesting. as student you notice when someone enjoy what they do and that make you more interested in learning. but even whit a good teacher, if the program isn't good you cannot do so much or if the other courses don't have relation whit this course, all the knowledge cannot put in practice, a lot less if you don´t have free time to practice. I think that if the university did the course more practical it would be more interesting end efficient, whit this i think in things like visits to theatre plays in english, conferences whit english speaking persons, maybe an agreement whit the british council, i dont know. basically get out of the classroom to integrate the english knowledge tothe daily life. to learn english you have to think in english, and even in the classrom we think in spanish.

  1. I also think that the program is bad, I learned very little in the English course, I hope to find some good course when my career ends.

  2. I learned the base of my english knowledge through videogames too, I was obligated to learn so I could play them. The program of english in schools needs to be changed now more than ever, Chile is more open to other countries resources so people can get greats opportunities through language.
